Why Follow Us on Twitter?

Several of you have recently asked “Why should I follow IfYouLikeGolf on Twitter - what would be the benefit to me?”

The easiest way to explain the benefits of following us on Twitter is by sighting a couple of examples.

First, a brief explanation as to what it means to follow someone on Twitter.

Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/) is a free service where you set up an account (and attach your cell phone number to that account), and then indicate what other accounts you would like to “follow.” When you “follow” someone on Twitter that simply means you receive a text message on your phone anytime that person or business updates their Twitter account. (An update is a text message of 140 characters or less.)

Now for two examples of how we are currently using Twitter at IfYouLikeGolf:

1. Tee times in local golf tournaments – When we post tee times for tournaments we will send a text message to Twitter which will contain a link to the tee times. Twitter will then forward that message to all our “followers.”

If you are a “follower” you will receive a text message immediately notifying you that tee times have been posted. Furthermore if your cell phone has internet access you will be able to instantly view the tee times on your phone. Yes, it is very cool…

As you can imagine it it would be impossible to send a similar text message directly to 100+ players but it is easy for us to send one message to Twitter. Twitter then forwards that message to the 100+ players instantly, so it is a great way for us to communicate tee times to players in a very efficient manner.

2. Live updates from tournament sites – We will begin to send live updates via Twitter during the local tournaments we cover. If you are unable to play you can stay current by receiving updates via text messages on your phone real time.

Please note that it is very easy to turn Twitter updates on and off once you have set up an account. Therefore you can easily pick and choose when you would like to receive the text message updates and when you would rather not be bothered.

These are not the only two ways we will be using Twitter. We have many other ideas for the future (such as hole-in-one updates and local club news), but it will only be effective if we have a good number of “followers.”

Finally, you should get in the habit of always clicking the “IYLG Blog / Twitter Updates” link on the left anytime you visit our site (that is what you are viewing now). As you can see on your right you can view the latest Twitter updates anytime by visiting this section.

Fairways and Greens and Happy Tweeting!!!
